Nicolas Cage loves Superman. He loves the character so much that he even named his son Kal-El, which is the iconic DC superhero’s real name. So it had to have been very exciting for the Oscar-winning actor to be cast as the Man of Steel back in the mid 1990s. Cage signed on to star in Superman Lives, a movie to be scripted by Kevin Smith and helmed by Tim Burton.
Unfortunately the production fell apart before shooting began. Cage must have been very disappointed. He went on to embody another major comic book character in two Ghost Rider movies instead. Recently, though, fans finally got a look at what might have been with his version of Superman in the documentary The Death of “Superman Lives”: What Happened?
Now, we are finally going to get to hear what Cage sounds like as Superman in another movie. The animated feature Teen Titans Go! To the Movies, arriving in theaters this summer, will bring the zany DC Comics sidekicks of Cartoon Network’s Teen Titans Go! to the big screen. Along for the ride will be the major DC heroes in brief apperances, including Superman voiced by Cage.
Whether Warner Bros. wanted to make it up to Cage or the studio hopes to nod to fans in the know, or both, casting the actor in the part, even for a vocal cameo, was surely a nod to the failed film of 20 years ago. Of course, then it would also make sense for them to have Armie Hammer voicing Batman, given he was cast in that part in an unmade Justice League movie.
In USA Today’s report on the casting, no name is given for the Caped Crusader, even though it will make sense for him to show up (his sidekick, Robin, is one of the main characters). Besides Superman, the other guest heroes include Wonder Woman, who will be voiced by singer/songwriter Halsey, and Green Lantern, who will be voiced by rapper Lil Yachty.
Teen Titans Go! To the Moviesopens on July 27. Watch the teaser below.
