West Ham are in talks to sign Anthony Modeste from Cologne.
Modeste scored 25 times in the Bundesliga last season. He was set to join Chinese club Tianjin Quanjian for £30m until the move collapsed on Wednesday.
We understand West Ham turned down the chance to sign Modeste for £6m last summer, but are now willing to pay £20m for him.
West Ham have also contacted Villarreal about signing striker Cedric Bakambu. Newcastle United are also interested in Bakambu, who scored 22 times last season.
Modeste is a powerful striker who has done extremely well in Germany, scoring 25 goals in the Bundesliga last season, but Cologne are believed to be demanding more than £35million for the player even though he is 29.
On Wednesday, a brief statement on Cologne’s official website said the Bundesliga club “have terminated discussions with Tianjin Quanjian regarding the transfer of Anthony Modeste.” It added that the transfer collapsed “after the parties involved were not able to reach an agreement.”
