Casting Bits: Kathy Bates Not Returning ‘American Horror Story,’ ‘Scandal’ Adds ‘Nashville’ Star and More

There’s been some big casting news for the 2017 fall season. FX’s anthology series, American Horror Story will be losing a big member of its cast for the upcoming season Cult. The final season of Scandal has landed two recognizable actors. Lastly, Marlee Maltin has joined a slightly rebooted Quantico.

Kathy Bates Out (for Now) on American Horror Story

Kathy Bates has been a mainstay on American Horror Story since she joined the somewhat revolving cast in season 3 Coven. When the show returns for American Horror Story: Cult later this year, Bates won’t be apart of the cast. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bates had to sit out the seventh iteration of AHS due to a scheduling conflict.

If fans want to see Bates however, they only have to look to Netflix. The reason that Bates won’t be part of American Horror Story: Cult is that she has a starring role on the Netflix sitcom, Disjointed, which will release online Friday, August 25. It’s unclear when, if at all, Bates will return to the horror franchise.
Marlee Matlin Joins Revamped Quantico
Quantico is set for a big change in his upcoming season 3. Former showrunner Joshua Safran has left the show and several series regulars have gone with him. Now Academy Award winning actress Marlee Matlin has joined the show, TVLine reports. Matlin will play a character named Jocelyn Turner. Jocelyn is a former FBI agent who was forced to retire into a “do-nothing” role after she was in accident that made her lose her hearing. (Matlin like Jocelyn is deaf.)
Jocelyn’s character will be a part of a special unit that the returning characters of Quantico will join in season 3. In addition to a new group with at least one new face, season 3 of Quantico hopes to streamline the show and its mythology. It won’t be quite a soft reboot but the effort will be made to attract new viewers to the show.
Shaun Toub and Jay Hernandez Join Scandal
Besides the fact that it will serve as the series’ goodbye not much is known about Scandal season 7. This latest casting news follows that trend.
TVLine reports that Shaun Toub, of Homeland fame, and Jay Hernandez (Nashville) has signed on Scandal season 7 in recurring roles. Details about their characters, including their names, have not been released yet.
Which of these bits of casting news gets you most excited? Who do you think Toub and Hernandez will play on Scandal? Will you tune into the new Quantico? Will you miss Kathy Bates on American Horror Story?
