As the season rolls on, two major awards contenders have just revealed their first teasers and both look great.
Fences (December 25)
Stars: Denzel Washington and Viola Davis
The story: Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, the film follows an African-American father in the 1950s who’s struggling to provide for his family amidst racial barriers while also coming to terms with the life he was never able to live.
Awards watch: Look for both Washington and Davis to be among the front-runners for lead-acting nominations. Both previously won Tony awards for playing the same characters in the stage adaptation on Broadway.
20th Century Women(December 25)
Stars: Annette Bening, Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwig, Billy Crudup
The story: Also a period piece, 20th Century Women follows the evolving story of three women exploring love, life and fulfillment in Southern California in the late 1970s. Based on this teaser, it seems as if writer-director Mike Mills (Beginners, Thumbsucker) colors the film with plenty of indie charm and relatable coming-of-age situations.
Awards watch: Annette Bening, who is no stranger to Oscars (nominated for four, though she’s never won), could easily slide into a leading actress category for her role here.
