Last we heard about Ben Affleck’s solo Batman movie, tentatively titled The Batman, it appeared that the main villain had been identified. Now both the title and the villain have been confirmed and, to some extent, explained.
First, the title. Affleck told Associated Press: “The movie I think is going to be called The Batman. At least that’s what we’re going with now. I might change it. … We’re working on the script. The script is going well. I’m really excited about it.”
Given the uncertainties that Affleck has expressed in the past, we have to accept that it’s the way he feels most comfortable working, especially on projects that he’s writing and directing. He’s proven himself time and time again in recent years, so we should just hope for the best.
Revealing his mindset a bit more, Affleck also talked about his new villain, Deathstroke, to be portrayed by Joe Manganiello. Affleck told Collider: “He’s a great villain because — I just had an instinctive feeling that he would match up with him well. You know, I’m a big admirer of that character as well, especially in the New 52 the way that they did Deathstroke, and I thought that it could work.”
In the New 52 series of comic books, which rebooted the DC universe, Deathstroke is a top mercenary who is known worldwide. He is driven to take on increasingly dangerous missions, eventually confronting his son, who may be a better mercenary than he is. The reboot opened up a new series of storylines for the character. Because he is somewhat past his prime, he may also find he has quite a bit in common with the somewhat older Batman that Affleck is now playing.
The Batman does not yet have a release date. We’ll next see Ben Affleck as Batman in Justice League, due out on November 17, 2017.
