Director Patty Jenkins Reacts to ‘Wonder Woman’ Being Named the Most Anticipated Summer Movie

In the largest summer movie survey ever conducted by Fandango, over 10,000 moviegoers were asked to name their most anticipated summer movies dropping between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and two major superhero movies lead the way. Making history as the first female-led film to sit atop Fandango’s summer movie survey, Wonder Woman (June 2) came in at number one, followed by the upcoming Spider-Man reboot, Spider-Man: Homecoming (July 7). Rounding out the top three was Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (May 26).

During an extensive conversation about the first live-action Wonder Woman movie with Fandango, we surprised director Patty Jenkins with the news that her film topped this year’s massive summer-movie survey. “Oh my God!,” she exclaimed when we dropped the news on her. “That’s amazing! These last few days have been so magical.”

Jenkins, clearly excited and thrilled to hear the news, was beyond grateful to learn that so many people wanted to see the film, in theaters June 2.

“Listen, who knows what’ll happen? I am not sure of anything,” she said. “People weren’t clear whether anybody would want to see a Wonder Woman film and I was always like, ‘What? Like, it’s Wonder Woman, man. This is such a great character!’ But I could feel that [positivity] coming from the world at moments, so to have that mirrored back, to have positivity mirrored back at us at this moment in the way certain people are reacting to the movie and then that from the audience is like… I just can’t put into words enough how grateful I am and we are for having believed in this movie and having the world come back at us that way. That’s unf***ingbelievable!”

We’ll have much more with Patty Jenkins as we inch closer to the film’s June 2 release. You can snag your Wonder Woman tickets right now here at Fandango.

Here’s some more from director Patty Jenkins on how the original Superman, Casablanca and more helped inspire her Wonder Woman movie.
