The notoriously media-shy director Terrence Malick usually chooses international venues to premiere his films. But appropriately enough, his new rock ‘n’ roll love story Song to Song made its world premiere opening the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin last Friday — the movie is set against the backdrop of Austin’s music scene. (Malick, in fact, went to college in Austin.)
In the film, about two couples who become entangled in relationships and betrayals, Ryan Gosling and Rooney Mara are two local musicians who fall in love, while Michael Fassbender plays a successful music exec who becomes involved with a waitress (Natalie Portman). In this clip, see Fassbender and Portman’s first flirtatious encounter as she waits tables in a diner.
Song to Song will open in limited release March 17.
