Nobody fully expected the 21 Jump Street movie to be as great as it was. It was based on an ’80s cop show with an absurd premise and no real attachment to the current generation of pop culture. And then the movie came out and it was not only hilarious, but was a solid action movie to boot. Well, get ready for that pattern to repeat with Baywatch. Yes, the ’90s show that’s mainly iconic for its swimsuit-clad men and women running in slow motion is getting turned into a movie. And yes, its first trailer looks genuinely funny.
Of course that’s bound to happen when you’ve got the Rock, an action-comedy heavyweight, anchoring your movie. Dwayne Johnson was born to play roles like these. He’s a handsome, oversized hero with a heart of gold and great sense of humor, and it’s great that the entire planet Earth is starting to realize it.
The other half of the Rock’s mismatched buddy-cop duo is Zac Efron, who has gone from the Disney Channel teen to man who is made of nothing but chiseled muscle and a killer sense of comedic timing. The next pillar of the movie is Alexandra Daddario, who looks to be playing the one most aware of just how ridiculous this whole beautiful-lifeguards-become-action-heroes business is. That’s just the core trio we meet in the trailer. The movie also stars Priyanka Chopra, Ifenesh Hadera, Jon Bass, Kelly Rohrbach, and most of the original show’s cast in cameo roles, but we’ll have to wait until further trailers to really meet the rest of the Baywatch team.
Baywatch will save the beaches, and look good doing it, on May 26, 2017.
