Here’s What We Know About the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Sequel

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

The sequel to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (above) began production this week, so new details about its cast and its official synopsis have been revealed. What do we know so far? Here’s a recap.

Who wrote the screenplay?

J.K. Rowling. She, of course, wrote all the Harry Potter books and was closely involved with the film adaptations. She wrote Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them directly for the screen and is planning to do so for all the sequels, too.

Has the official synopsis been revealed yet?

After months of speculation, we finally have the official synopsis, via Deadline:

“As he promised he would, Grindelwald has made a dramatic escape and has been gathering more followers to his cause — elevating wizards above all nonmagical beings. The only one who might be able to stop him is the wizard he once called his dearest friend, Albus Dumbledore. But Dumbledore will need help from the wizard who had thwarted Grindelwald once before, his former student Newt Scamander. The adventure reunites Newt with Tina (Katherine Waterston), Queenie (Alison Sudol) and Jacob (Dan Fogler), but his mission will also test their loyalties as they face new perils in an increasingly dangerous and divided wizarding world.”

Who is starring?

Johnny Depp (Grindelwald), Jude Law (Albus Dumbledore), Eddie Redmayne (Newt Scamander), Katherine Waterston (Tina), Alison Sudol (Queenie), Dan Fogler (Jacob), Ezra Miller (Credence Barebone) and Zoe Kravitz (Leta Lestrange).

Who are the newest cast members?

Per THR, Callum Turner joins as Newt’s brother Theseus, a war hero. Claudia Kim will play an attraction at a wizarding circus, William Nadylam will portray a wizard, Ingvar Sigurdsson will play a bounty hunter, Olafur Darri Olafsson will run the circus, and Kevin Guthrie will head the Magical Congress of the U.S.A.

Who is directing?

David Yates, who directed the final four installments of the Harry Potter series, as well as Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

When will the movie, which is not yet officially titled, be released in theaters?

November 16, 2018.
