The fall movie season is already filled with much-anticipated horror movies — like Blair Witch, which opens in theaters today — but what can we anticipate next year?
Heading for release on May 19, 2017, Annabelle 2 is the sequel to Annabelle, which itself was a spin-off from The Conjuring. As with the first installment, which was set in 1970, Annabelle 2 revolves around a vintage doll named Annabelle.
This time she’s in the possession of her creator, a doll maker, so it appears that the movie is a prequel to Annabelle. The doll maker and his wife, still mourning the death of their young daughter several years before, are happy to take in a nun and several girls. The ladies were living in an orphanage before it was closed, so they’re happy for the place of refuge. But it’s not quite as cozy as they might have hoped. Check out the first, unsettling teaser below.
Miranda Otto, Stephanie Sigman and Anthony LaPaglia star. David F. Sandberg (pictured at top) directed; he and producer James Wan previously worked together on the terrific Lights Out.
While the horror in Annabelle 2 begins with a doll, The Bye Bye Man centers on a more mysterious figure. Three college students move into an old house off campus, thinking they’ve found a great new, unusual place to live. Unfortunately for them, they accidentally set loose a supernatural entity; once they stumble upon his name, the creature begins to prey upon them.
As revealed in the first trailer, the evil can spread far and wide very, very quickly. Watch it below, if you dare, but don’t say its title out loud.
Douglas Smith, Lucien Laviscount, Cressida Bonas, Doug Jones and Carrie-Anne Moss star. The Bye Bye Man will arrive in theaters on January 13, 2017.
