‘Jurassic World 2’ Will Be More Connected to ‘Jurassic Park,’ Begins Shooting in March

Jurassic World made close to $2 billion, which means the sequel probably shouldn’t divert too much from its formula. But if there’s anything fans might love to see more of in subsequent installments it’s more characters from the original movie, Jurassic Park. That sort of direct tie-in casting hasn’t been announced yet, if it ever will be, but the director of Jurassic World 2 — aka Jurassic Park 5 — is hinting that we’ll see something linking it more to the first movie than we saw with last year’s soft reboot.

J.A. Bayona told Cinema Blend:

“What we’re doing is a sequel to Jurassic World, but it’s definitely the fifth chapter of a longer saga. It’s very interesting. It’s always tricky, but you need to find a balance in what people expect to find, and the new stuff you’re bringing to the story. And I think the story is looking for a connection between Jurassic World and Jurassic Park — more than what Jurassic World did.”

Jurassic World didn’t exactly ignore Jurassic Park. It revisits a lot of sites and pays homage to many of scenes from the original. So what could make Jurassic World 2 more connected? Sam Neill has implied he’s done with the franchise, but maybe Jeff Goldblum or Laura Dern will return — the latter hasn’t gotten to encounter dinos since the first movie. Or maybe there’s a plot thread, perhaps something involving the competitors Nedry was trying to steal embryos for? It’s time to start those theories.

By way of a /Film post, we also got a related quote from Bayona about the sequel and how it ties to the original movies externally. In the past he’s talked about his collaboration with Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow, who is now producing Jurassic World 2, being akin to the Steven Spielberg/George Lucas relationship on the Indiana Jones movies. Now he told ComingSoon.net that he’s also working very closely with Spielberg, who directed the first two Jurassic Park movies and served as executive producer on the rest:

“Every story is different and you need to find the depth of every story and try to express it on the screen. The Jurassic World sequel is a more collaborative filmmaker experience, not only with Colin Trevorrow, but also with Steven [Spielberg] and with Frank Marshall. It’s their baby as much as it is mine. It’s about sharing views and working together to bring the story to life. But, at the same time, the way I face telling a story is to find something very personal. I think there will be plenty of myself also in the film.”

So it’s going to fit more into the series, is a more collaborative effort and yet also a more personal movie for its director. Jurassic World 2 is becoming more and more intriguing by the day. Especially since all we know so far is that it will be scarier and it will be an animal-rights parable. We also know now that production begins in March 2017. The movie will then be released on June 22, 2018.
