Kirsten Stewart and Lupita Nyong’o May Star in the ‘Charlie’s Angels’ Reboot

It’s been more than 40 years since the original Charlie’s Angels TV show first hit the airwaves, 17 years since the first movie adaptation debuted on the big screen and six years since a small-screen reboot was attempted. Sony is currently working on continuing the circle with another theatrical effort, and the studio is looking at some excellent choices for the lead roles.

According to Variety, Kristen Stewart is being eyed for one of the sleuthing trio of women, with Lupita Nyong’o also in the mix. Both actresses are major film franchise vets, Stewart from Twilight and Nyong’o with Star Wars, but they’re also each considered among the greatest performers working today. Stewart has mostly moved on to arthouse fare and was the first American actress to win France’s Cesar Award for her performance in Clouds of Sils Maria. And Nyong’o won an Oscar for her performance in 12 Years a Slave.

The primary cast of 2000’s Charlie’s Angels and its 2003 sequel Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle also showcased powerful women who also had the obligatory sex appeal, but the reboot will up the level of strong female representation by also being helmed by a woman. Elizabeth Banks, who had a huge success with her feature directorial debut, Pitch Perfect 2, holding the reigns of the summer 2019 tentpole. Now they just need to rework the premise a bit so the “Charlie” of the title is portrayed by a female voice, as well (maybe Banks?).

John Forsythe gave voice to the never-seen Charlie in the ’70s series and the two movies, but he died in 2010. Victor Garber took on the role for the 2011 show. The basic idea behind the property was that Charlie employed three beautiful women who’d been taken for granted as policewomen as private eyes (the TV reboot reworked the Angels so they were redemption cases). How faithful this new version will be has not been revealed yet.

Charlie’s Angels flies into theaters June 7, 2019.
