No blindfolds needed for this one, folks!
While it’s still going to take virtual reality more time to catch on in a major every-household-has-a-headset kind of way, we continue to see Hollywood toy with smaller VR experiences tied to movies as a marketing tool for said movies. Films that have created tie-in VR experiences include everything from The Conjuring 2 to Insurgent to The Walk, with filmmakers experimenting across multiple genres to see how best to draw audiences closer to the larger story being told on the big screen.
It’s not just the action and horror genres getting to play either, as the upcoming Fifty Shades sequels, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed, will introduce VR experiences tied to their marketing campaigns.
Just how kinky those experiences will be remains to be seen, but director James Foley did tease during a recent VR discussion that moviegoers will have a chance to step inside scenes from the film with a complete 360-degree view of the action.
“There’s marketing materials for behind the scenes [of Fifty Shades Darker], where after we finished shooting for the day, the actors would stay over and VR people would re-create a facsimile of the scene,” he said.
Foley went on to add that material they created for Fifty Shades Darker “expanded” his brain, and that he definitely sees VR being used a lot more in the future as cinema is reinvented to pave the way for lengthier interactive experiences, comparing this VR shift to the transition between film and digital. “The train is leaving the station, I think, and traveling really fast,” he said.
Fifty Shades Darker hits theaters on February 10, 2017. Currently, there’s no word on whether its VR experiences will only be available in select theaters, or if you’ll be able to download them for use at home. (We’re thinking audiences may prefer the latter… wink wink.)
