‘Rogue One’ Made Joss Whedon Want to Direct a ‘Star Wars’ Movie

When a filmmaker reaches a certain level of the Hollywood stratosphere it’s easy to imagine that they’re plugged into everything, that they’ve got hookups and insights the rest of us normal people can only dream of. And while that’s no doubt true for many, some try to stay as relatively normal as they can. Take Avengers director Joss Whedon for example. He’s made some of the most popular films and TV shows of all time, but he still sits at home with his daughter watching episodes of The Flash and Supergirl every week. He still goes on the Internet and watches trailers for big Hollywood movies like the rest of us.

One big difference between Whedon and the rest of us, though, is that when a movie trailer inspires him, he may actually be able to do something about it. At least we hope that’s the case, since apparently Whedon saw the trailer for Rogue One and said, “I want to do that.”

That’s what he told Complex in a recent interview. Whedon has been very public about how making two Avengers movies exhausted him, but when asked if he’d ever return to franchise filmmaking, he rattled off a list of properties that would excite him. James Bond and Catwoman made the list, but it seems like it’s the idea of making a Star Wars spin-off that stuck with him most.

Of course, that doesn’t guarantee it’ll happen. Whedon hasn’t fully committed to any future projects. Right now he’s focused on finishing a screenplay that’s cryptically being described as “A historical fiction-slash-horror movie about a time when the world was going insane, World War II.” He also referred to it as being as dark as anything he’s ever written, which is weirdly exciting considering Whedon has a real knack for horror (Cabin in the Woods, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel all go to really dark places at times). Presumably once he finishes that screenplay up he’ll make it his next directorial project, but who knows what’s after. Now that he’s throwing Star Wars talk out into the world, Disney may once again be knocking at his door.
