Nobody expected Creed to be such a phenomenal success, but the Rocky franchise legacy sequel had a winning team. Writer-director Ryan Coogler and his regular leading man Michael B. Jordan plus an Oscar-worthy supporting turn by original star Sylvester Stallone added up to a series-best Rotten Tomatoes score of 95% plus its best box office success in 30 years and its first Academy Awards recognition since Rocky III in 1982.
The same group won’t be all together again for the next installment, as Coogler moved on to Black Panther (with Jordan co-starring there) and has apparently declined to return for Creed 2. Instead, as revealed on Instagram, Stallone is “looking forward to directing and producing” the sequel. “One more round!” he added, noting that Jordan will be back as Adonis Creed and that filming will begin next year. Stallone also wrote the script.

We’ve been hearing about Creed 2 since the first movie was released, but nothing has ever been officially announced. Stallone just keeps on teasing things via his Instagram, including the idea that the movie would involve Russian boxer Ivan Drago from Rocky IV. Actor Dolph Lundgren, who played the character in that hugely popular and politically tinged installment, has also posted on social media how he’s training to reprise the role. The rumored plot is that Adonis goes up against Drago, attemptig revenge on the man who killed his father in the ring.
Stallone directing Creed 2 is not weird at all. The actor, who earned an Oscar nomination for his performance as the title hero in the orignal Rocky, took the helm of Rocky II as his sophomore directorial effort. He then continued to steer the series, directing Rocky III, Rocky IV and the sixth part, Rocky Balboa. John G. Avildsen, who made the first movie, took over on Rocky V. All of the Stallone-helmed installments have fresh Rotten Tomatoes scores except Rocky IV, though that one is at least a fan favorite and the highest-grossing of the franchise.
