Some directors churn out a new movie every other year or so. Kathryn Bigelow, however, is a bit more judicious in the projects she takes on. Whether it be the classic bank-robbery thriller Point Break, the underrated sci-fi gem Strange Days, or her first foray into the war in the Middle East, The Hurt Locker, Bigelow tends to shape her projects for years at a time.
Her last feature was 2012’s Zero Dark Thirty, and since then she’s been working on a movie that’s managed to stay pretty well under the radar despite its high profile. For years it didn’t even have a name and was just called the Untitled Detroit Project. But today things change with the arrival of the first trailer for Detroit.
Check it out.
Written by her Zero Dark Thirty writer Mark Boal, Detroit boasts a remarkable ensemble that includes John Boyega, Anthony Mackie, John Krasinski, Jack Reynor, Jason Mitchell, Hanna Murray, Will Poulter and many more. It’s about a controversial raid by the Detroit Police Department in 1967 that resulted in one of the largest citizen uprisings the U.S. has ever seen, and based on this trailer it’s going to be one of the more visceral and chilling moviegoing events of the summer.
Detroit hits theaters on August 4, 2017.
